History
The Arzamas Machinery Plant specialises in wheeled armoured personnel carriers and special-purpose vehicles. It was founded in 1972 in Arzamas, in the Nizhny Novgorod region, as a defence-industry enterprise.
Its main products were BTR-series armoured personnel carriers for the Soviet army and for export. In Soviet times the plant built defence equipment exclusively; with the move to a market economy it had to add civilian vehicles, and in the 1990s it began producing armoured cars for law-enforcement agencies and cash-in-transit work.
The plant's facilities allow it to build complex multi-axle wheeled vehicles with high payloads and special protection. It is the only Russian producer of wheeled armoured personnel carriers, building the modern BTR-80 and BTR-82A families and their derivatives for the Russian forces and for export.
