History
The Likino Bus Plant was the main Soviet producer of large city buses, based in Likino-Dulyovo in the Moscow region. Founded in 1937 as an engineering works, it was converted to bus production in 1959.
Its first and most famous model was the LiAZ-677, built from 1967. This distinctive orange-and-yellow bus with a hydromechanical automatic gearbox came to embody Soviet city transport and ran in every large city in the country. Despite the nickname it earned for rush-hour crowding, passengers liked it for its smooth ride.
The LiAZ-677 stayed in production until 1994 — an extraordinarily long run for a single model. In the 1980s the plant added the more modern LiAZ-5256 with independent suspension. Today LiAZ belongs to the GAZ Group and still builds buses for Russian cities, keeping its place as the market leader.
